A Complete Guide to Selecting the Right uPVC Casing Pipe for Borewells

The casing pipe is the one component in a borewell you cannot replace without drilling a new well. Everything else — pump, motor, rising main, control panel — can be pulled out and swapped. The casing stays in the ground permanently. Getting the specification wrong is expensive in a way nothing else about borewell construction is.

uPVC is now the standard for most farm and community borewells across India, and the reason is simple: it doesn't corrode. A steel or galvanised casing looks fine at installation and starts corroding from day one in most Indian groundwater conditions. uPVC doesn't react with water chemistry, doesn't rust, and doesn't harbour the bacterial growth that rough metal surfaces encourage.

Diameter comes first and is determined by your pump, not by the well. Size the casing to fit the submersible pump you intend to install — with adequate clearance for the pump body, the cable, and the rising main. Get this wrong and you either cannot install the pump you need or you downgrade to a less powerful unit.

Wall thickness is a function of depth and soil. For borewells shallower than 50 metres in stable soil, PN4 is adequate. Beyond 100 metres, use PN6 or PN8 — the hydrostatic load and the column weight of the casing itself during installation both increase significantly. In expansive or unstable soils, go one grade heavier than the depth calculation alone would suggest.

Perforation pattern matters for yield. Perforated sections should sit at aquifer zones, not against impermeable layers. Get a proper borewell log from your driller before specifying — it tells you where water-bearing zones actually are. Perforating the wrong sections gives you a structurally sound casing and a well that barely produces.
