A Complete Guide to Selecting the Right uPVC Casing Pipe for Borewells

Borewells are a lifeline for water supply across India's semi-arid and rural regions. The performance and longevity of a borewell system depend heavily on the quality and specifications of the casing pipe used to line the borewell shaft.

uPVC casing pipes have emerged as the preferred choice for borewell applications due to their corrosion resistance, chemical inertness, and structural strength. Unlike metal casing pipes, uPVC does not rust or react with groundwater chemistry, ensuring consistent water quality throughout the system's life.

The key selection criteria for uPVC casing pipes include: pipe diameter (matched to the submersible pump size), wall thickness (determined by borewell depth and soil conditions), and perforation pattern (for aquifer zones where water ingress is needed).

For shallow borewells up to 50 metres, lighter wall thicknesses in the PN4 range are typically sufficient. For deeper borewells in the 100–200 metre range, heavier-duty PN6 or PN8 pipes with reinforced joints are recommended to handle the additional hydrostatic pressure and soil loads.

Proper installation is as important as pipe selection. Ensure smooth coupling alignment, use appropriate adhesives for solvent welding, and always install a gravel pack around perforated sections to prevent fine soil particles from entering the well.
